Water Forum series 3, meeting notes #16 *************************************** 15-May-2011 ~ wf16-15may11.txt SUSTAINABLE CANTERBURY ~ Mauri Roa Waitaha The Save Our Water Forum on sustainable water use, of 15 May 2011 - held 3pm at the Workers' Educational Association, 59 Gloucester Street in Christchurch - resolved to meet again after one month, after consultation with more members as to whether a return to Saturday meetings was preferred. An answer is invited and pending; until then no change. 15 May 2011: present - 3 ; apologies - 4. 1. Sustainable Canterbury draft charter: ADOPTED and available @ http://www.infohelp.co.nz/docs/SustCantyCharter1.pdf Those interested may like to join the Sustainable Canterbury e-mail list by contacting: rik@infohelp.co.nz / 033321069 2a. We discussed the postponed 22 March forum and the reduced levels of energy and civic engagement post-earthquake, and set the forum back until around October - noting the timeliness of a "Water talk" with speakers pre 26 Nov. General Election. 2b. We plan to host a different forum sooner, a Tuesday night in August, on: "Sustainable Energy - land use for food, fuel, electricity, biodiversity, and water conservation". Tony Raizis will speak on "How to do the change" in personal and nutritional behaviours, with perhaps Arthur Williamson on the wider issues? On the water questions too, facts and not rants are to be emphasised. 3. Internet presence - requested, so http://mauriroawaitaha.wordpress.com has been set up for Sustainable Canterbury online. A purposed, searchable blog was needed under a "climate change" tag for wider communications. This to supplement other social media use we have tried to promote, to reach out to the related networks around us: Canterbury Public Issues Forum - http://forums.e-democracy.org/groups/canterburyissues - LinkedIn (etc social networking) and Street Groups. Please establish CPIF etc user accounts and communicate there often, using the http://mauriroawaitaha.wordpress.com web address as a footnote. 4. Theme examples wanted to be promoted online: climate change response; HotTopic link and discussion; cycling etc lifestyle changes; connections - macropolitical, movements etc; James Hansen visit and Kim Hill interview podcast on RadioNZ; URGENCY - calamaties and losses human and material eg food (Queensland), biodiversity, etc. 5. Other topics headed up, but put aside by 5pm 15 May meeting close: i. Legislative and current political context - re dam-building/funding - respond. ii. Local/regional governance activism need. iii. 2011 democratic work - any? iv. City water quality issues esp chlorine - Save Our Water / Our Water Our City campaign brands can be brought into use. NEXT MEETING: Sunday, 19 June 2011, 3-5pm at WEA Christchurch. All welcome.
